Chapter Overview
Dualism starts from truths a physicalist should keep: experience has a point of view, and no account from outside can give us the bat’s own view. I grant that even after ideal thought we can conceive of a full physical twin with no felt life, but I deny that this twin could exist. What thought tells us about what could exist remains the point at issue, not our power to form the thought. A second test asks what a distinct mental cause could do if physical causes already suffice: change their course, cause the same effect again, or do nothing. Causing an effect twice differs from doing nothing, so each choice needs its own reply. I argue that felt life belongs to our physical life and its world-shaped past; a copy of present inner roles alone leaves that past out.
Consider the bat.
Thomas Nagel asks us to imagine what it would be like to be a bat—navigating by echolocation, building a sonic picture of the world from returning cries.1 We can know its nervous system, acoustic processing, and spatial maps in exquisite detail. We can even imagine hanging upside down in a dark cave. What we cannot imagine, Nagel says, is what it feels like from the bat’s point of view to inhabit that moving, three-dimensional sound-map. There is a fact about what that experience is like. We cannot access it from outside.
That is the point Nagel wants to make, and it cuts deep. The problem isn’t that we lack data about bats. It’s that all the data in the world (every neuron mapped, every acoustic pathway charted, every behavior explained) describes the bat from a third-person perspective, as an object in the world. But experience has a first-person character. It presents itself from somewhere, to someone. And that somewhere, that to-whom, seems to fall clean outside anything science’s objective vocabulary can reach.
Nagel isn’t trafficking in mysticism. He isn’t claiming that bats have immaterial minds, or that experience floats free of the physical world in some ghostly parallel realm. His claim is more modest and, for that reason, more difficult to dismiss: there is something it is like to be a bat, and no third-person description fully captures what that something is. The subjective character of experience, the what-it’s-likeness, seems to resist reduction to the terms physics and neuroscience use to describe everything else.
Most people, on reflection, find this compelling, and with reason. The mistake comes later, in what we ask the observation to explain.
9.1 The Hard Problem and the Zombie
Chapter 2 stated the Hard Problem whole. Here is its sharpest formal edge: Chalmers’s zombie — a physical duplicate of a human being, molecule for molecule identical, with the lights off inside. All the neural processing happens, all the behavior results, and nothing it is like to be it. The argument from the zombie runs clean.
If such a creature is conceivable, Chalmers holds, it is possible; and if a physical duplicate could lack experience, then experience must be something over and above the physical. Dualism of some kind follows.
The conclusion still depends on the bridge from conceivability to possibility.
The chat window gives the question a practical setting. A fluent reply leaves open what, if anything, the system feels. That uncertainty does not by itself support either verdict. Part Four asks which facts about an actual system could carry the inquiry beyond what we can imagine about it.
9.2 The Diagnosis: What Makes the Gap Feel Unbridgeable
Joseph Levine coined explanatory gap for a problem distinct from Chalmers’s Hard Problem.2 Grant that consciousness involves nothing beyond the physical and that pain amounts to a neural process—C-fiber stimulation in the textbook caricature, or some more complex state neuroscience discovers. We can explain why that process produces avoidance, recruits attention, and integrates with memory, yet still seem unable to explain why it hurts. A complete physical story leaves felt character hanging. Levine’s gap lies in our understanding rather than the world, and troubles even committed physicalists.
Chalmers gave Levine’s gap an ontological consequence, but he did not get there by stamping metaphysical on an epistemic problem. The zombie argument supplies the bridge. His premise concerns ideal primary positive conceivability: a coherently imagined scenario that survives ideal rational reflection and verifies the full physical truth without consciousness when the scenario gets considered as actual. Chalmers argues that such conceivability entails primary possibility; if a possible world verifies the scenario, the physical facts do not fix all the facts.3
One especially dramatic rendering of the Hard Problem feels unbridgeable because it misdescribes both sides. On one side stand physical processes, described in entirely third-person, functional, structural vocabulary. On the other side stands phenomenal experience, described as inner, private, intrinsic, self-contained: as qualia in the philosopher’s sense, as the contents of the inner theater diagnosed in Chapter 2.
Once experience gets described that way, as inner phenomenal items whose intrinsic properties could in principle obtain independently of any representational relation to the world, no physical process could plausibly produce it. Of course a gap opens. You have stipulated that the two sides occupy entirely different categories. Seal an exhibit behind glass and the unreachability you then discover is the glass. The mystery follows from the description, not from the phenomenon.4
But strong representationalism (developed across Chapters 4 to 6 from the transparency of experience) contests precisely that description. Phenomenal character is not an inner self-standing item at all. It is a way a system represents its environment — the representational content of perceptual and bodily experience, made manifest from the inside. Experience involves the world in its very constitution. It directs itself, by its nature, outward. Physical processes that realize experience are the processes by which an organism represents its environment, and those representations, lived from the inside, simply are the experience of that environment. There exists no further inner item to account for, because the supposed inner item never figured in any faithful description of experience to begin with.
Once that description shifts, the gap narrows without vanishing. What looked like a chasm between physical processes and inner phenomenal items depends on a picture already dismantled. Strip the picture away and the question becomes a hard scientific one: how does a physical system represent its environment in the perspectivally rich way conscious organisms do? Levine’s quieter epistemic gap survives, as does Chalmers’s argument that ideal conceivability carries modal weight. Chapter 11 asks how the identity claim meets both. The glass-case diagnosis removes only the chasm manufactured by treating phenomenal character as intrinsic inner paint.
9.3 The Limits of Conceivability: Which Duplicate Has the Lights On
The zombie now meets the standard Chapter 8 applied to Mary. Even after ideal reflection, we can coherently imagine the scenario as a way the world might actually be. Chalmers calls this ideal primary positive conceivability and argues that it entails primary possibility.
Apparent possibilities such as water without H₂O, heat without molecular motion, and the morning star without the evening star lost their force once inquiry showed what the terms picked out. The conceiving may remain available under some description; what changed was our judgment about what the world could contain. Chalmers has a worked-out reply to exactly these examples: ordinary identities involve contingent ways of fixing reference, he argues, while phenomenal concepts do not. Chapter 11 meets that reply in full.
Grant the conceiving permanently. Conjoin the whole physical story of a duplicate with and the lights are off; fill in the scenario coherently, consider it as actual, and no contradiction surfaces under ideal rational reflection. I grant Chalmers that stronger premise, not merely a vivid mental picture. I refuse the next inference: that this coherent conception describes a metaphysically possible world.
What follows from that comes to less than it looks, and the reason sits in how you came by the concept you just used. You know what seeing red is like because you have seen red. That concept arrives by acquaintance and points straight at its object, carrying no description in the middle that reflection could pull apart and lay against a physical description. Its object lies out on the far side of the looking: the red of the tomato, not an inner swatch standing in for it — Section 9.2 left no such swatch to inspect. Acquaintance here names something you underwent, and the concept it installs reaches through that undergoing to the world. Two concepts acquired that differently, one by undergoing something and one by reading, will never lock together on the page, whatever they turn out to pick out in the world. So they come apart in thought, every time, on request. Chapter 11 makes this its centerpiece. Here it does one job: it explains why the conceiving stays easy no matter how the metaphysics turns out.5
And there the argument reaches its real point of dispute. The story about concept acquisition explains why zombie conceivability persists if the identity claim holds. It does not yet tell us what that conceiving reveals about possibility. Chalmers says the phenomenal case differs from water precisely here: for core phenomenal concepts, no contingent description fixes the reference and waits for science to uncover the underlying nature. What verifies the phenomenal description also satisfies it. Ideal conceivability therefore carries modal weight, unless the physicalist accepts a necessity that no a priori conceptual route reveals — the “strong necessity” Chapter 11 meets directly.
Persistent conceivability does not decide between the views, because the type-B physicalist predicts it too. The dualist can still hold that the conceiving tracks a real possibility; the physicalist can deny the governing modal principle. The zombie argument shows that the epistemic gap runs deep and stays. The modal verdict depends on the identity claim of Chapter 6 and the strong-necessity dispute in Chapter 11.
Two duplicates now need to stand side by side. The full physical duplicate belongs to a world matching ours in its physical history as well as its present state. It retains the organism’s encounters, learning, and content-fixing relations. The present-role duplicate matches current internal organization and input-output dispositions but lacks that history. Calling the second a complete functional duplicate would hide the omission: a wide functional account includes the very relations we have removed.
On the theory defended here, the first shares our content and phenomenal character; a further stipulation that it lacks experience remains conceivable but cannot hold. The second does not inherit the first’s content merely by matching its present roles. Chapter 15 takes up the historyless case as Swampman and accepts the cost of the historical theory. A historyless present-role duplicate may therefore lack felt life: the limited zombie possibility this account allows. One comparison fixes the physical world and its past; the other deliberately does not. The different verdicts follow that difference in the cases.
Neither duplicate describes an existing language model. Actual models have training histories, including causal links to human linguistic practices; they are not historyless. Nor has Part Four claimed a perfect human functional duplicate. Those systems require assessment on their actual histories and capacities, not classification by resemblance to either imagined creature.
9.4 The Completeness of the Physical
Even if the glass-case diagnosis and the phenomenal-concept account leave the ideal zombie intact, the argument must still leave the thought experiment and enter this world, where a non-physical mind would have work to do. Here it meets a constraint independent of how zombies seem.
Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia spotted the trouble at its source. In 1643, at twenty-four and exiled in The Hague, she asked Descartes how a soul with no extension, surface, or location could push the body’s animal spirits.6 Pushing seemed to require contact, and contact extension—the very feature his soul lacked. His appeal to notions proper to soul, body, and their union did not explain the interaction. Elisabeth replied that she would sooner grant the soul extension than grant an immaterial thing power to move a body. Descartes finally suggested that people who do not philosophize understand the union best—advice that concedes more than it answers. Nearly four centuries of physics have added a harder question: whether anything remains for the soul to do.
The modern question concerns causal completeness: do prior physical conditions suffice for physical effects, fixing either their outcomes or their chances? The case comes from the success of physiological explanation. Retinal activity, nerve transmission, and muscle contraction yield to accounts in terms of physical mechanisms. No established result in that record requires a non-physical intervention. Conservation laws constrain proposed mechanisms, but cannot establish completeness on their own: an intervention need not advertise itself as newly created energy.7
David Papineau traces the historical case from early mechanics, through the unsettled status of forces, to conservation and twentieth-century physiology. It supports a general conclusion beyond the individual mechanisms examined. That makes completeness a serious empirical commitment, open to contrary evidence, rather than a theorem that forbids finding any.
For a dualist who treats consciousness as distinct from its physical basis, three options remain.
- Change the physical course. A mental cause could alter a synapse or change the chances of an outcome beyond what prior physical conditions fix. That rejects completeness and carries an empirical burden: identify the alteration and show why the physical account cannot explain it.
- Cause the same effect twice over. A mental cause and a distinct physical cause might each suffice for the same movement. Philosophers call this overdetermination. The mental cause would genuinely act, even though the physical cause already sufficed; it would not become causally idle. Completeness alone cannot rule this out. Rejecting it requires the further premise that ordinary mental effects do not systematically have two distinct sufficient causes. The dualist can make the causes depend on each other by law, avoiding an accidental coincidence. My objection is comparative: without independent evidence for that double causation, identity preserves mental efficacy and the physical explanation without adding laws that keep distinct causes aligned.
- Accompany without influencing. Consciousness could occur alongside the physical process while causing no physical effect. Thomas Huxley proposed this in 1874 through his steam-whistle analogy: the whistle accompanies the locomotive’s work without driving it.8 The position, epiphenomenalism, also appears in Jackson’s original Mary paper. It preserves completeness, but conscious experience then contributes nothing to the causal production of our reports about it.
The third option exposes an evidential problem, though it does not refute property dualism. If the phenomenal property never helps cause a judgment about experience, that judgment cannot count as a causal response to it. The dualist’s common-cause reply holds that the neural state produces the judgment and fixes the phenomenal property in one stroke. Across worlds governed by the same psychophysical laws, that arrangement may secure ordinary reliability. The question shifts to warrant: how does the judgment become about a property omitted from its causal production? Chalmers answers by making acquaintance constitutive rather than causal, and Chapter 11 gives that answer its full hearing. This problem belongs to epiphenomenalism; it cannot simply be transferred to the overdetermination option, which retains mental causes.
Causal completeness concerns the sufficiency of physical causes, not everything that exists or which vocabulary explains best. A property dualist can grant it. Nor does it make particle physics the best language for understanding a mind: bodies representing their environments remain wholly physical without demanding translation into physics-talk. The constraint operates inside nature and stays silent about whether nature has an author.
The case against a distinct mental cause therefore needs more than completeness. Interactionism must challenge the physiological evidence; systematic overdetermination must justify its paired causes; epiphenomenalism must explain our warrant for judgments about a causally silent property. I favor identity over those alternatives, but the reasons differ. Panpsychism and Russellian monism need not posit a second cause at all: they locate phenomenal nature in what already does the physical work. Chapter 10 meets that rival on its own ground. The claim that mind consists in software likewise proposes no cause outside the physical order; Chapter 20 gives it a separate hearing.
9.5 What Dualism Gets Right
Dualism persists not because philosophers are confused but because it captures something real.
- It gets right that experience has a first-person perspective. Experience happens for someone, to someone. The bat’s echolocation presents the world to the bat. The bat occupies a point of view. This first-person character cannot be reduced away without loss, and any adequate account of consciousness must preserve it.
- It gets right that objective description leaves something out — not something mysterious over and above the physical, but something perspectival. The third-person vocabulary of physics and neuroscience describes the world from no particular point of view. Experience has a point of view. These are different modes of description, and switching between them involves a genuine shift, not just a change of vocabulary. Nagel was right about this.
- It gets right that consciousness matters. That the world contains subjective experience (that there is something it is like to be a bat, or a human being, or presumably many other organisms) is not a trivial addendum to the physical story. A physicalism that explains it away has changed the subject, not won the argument.
Dualism goes wrong in its explanation of these genuine observations. From the fact that experience has a first-person character, dualism infers that experience comes equipped with properties belonging to a separate ontological realm. From the fact that objective description leaves the perspectival out, it infers that the perspectival must be non-physical. From the fact that consciousness matters, it infers that consciousness must be something beyond the physical processes that realize it.
These inferences don’t follow. The first-person character of experience is real, but it belongs to a physical organism representing its environment from its particular embodied position in the world. The perspectival falls outside objective description — not because it belongs to a separate realm, but because objective description abstracts away from particularity by design. That abstracting is its function, its virtue, and its limitation. Consciousness matters because experience engages the world, not because it is made of ghostly stuff.
9.6 Living With the Residue
Even after all this, a genuine puzzle remains: why should any arrangement of matter represent the world to itself? Why should there be any inside view? I don’t think anyone has answered it fully. But once the inner-theater picture goes, the question concerns why a perspectival relation to the world should feel like anything at all, not how physical processes produce inner phenomenal items. Chapter 11 asks whether that residue is the predicted shadow of an identity rather than the unpaid debt of an incomplete theory.
One limit would remain even after a scientific answer: no third-person account can hand its reader the first-person standpoint it describes. A map can locate a viewpoint without putting you there. That marks a limit on transmission and access, not necessarily an unpaid explanatory fact.
Dualism points at something real, and physicalism, handled carefully, can honor what it points at without following it into a second ontological realm.
Something it is like to be you, reading this: real, physical, directed at the page, and thoroughly of this world. The bat is welcome to its own version.
Chapter Summary
The claim. Nagel’s bat, Chalmers’s hard problem, and the zombie give the dualist intuition real force without proving dualism. Moving from a lasting first-person gap to a nonphysical mind adds something to reality when the evidence shows only unequal routes of access.
Where the argument stands. Ideal conceivability remains compatible with the type-B account; its modal force remains disputed. Causal completeness burdens interactionism but permits systematic double causation or causally silent experience. Identity avoids the former’s extra coordination, while the latter owes an account of our knowledge of a property that never helps cause our reports.
What’s left open. The modal dispute remains real. Does ideal conceivability reveal possibility, or can an a posteriori identity outrun it? The identity claim must carry that answer; causal closure cannot.
The hand-off. A subtler rival accepts closure and locates phenomenal nature in matter’s own causal powers. No second cause need enter. The next chapter asks what that proposal explains.
