Aims and scope

Mind, Matter, and Meaning Review publishes papers and substantive exchanges on consciousness, meaning, cognition, artificial minds, and their philosophical foundations, including the philosophy of perception, language, and knowledge where they bear on those questions.

Its distinctive aim is sustained debate. A paper here is the beginning of an exchange, not the end of one: each has a permanent page where criticism, responses, and author replies accumulate against an identified version of the text. Work that challenges the views defended in Mind, Matter, and Meaning is welcome, and agreement with the book or its editor confers no advantage.

Publication model

The journal publishes continuously. Each contribution appears when it is ready rather than waiting for a scheduled issue. Each calendar year forms one volume, and each contribution receives an article number within it, so the first paper of 2026 appears as Volume 1, Article 1.

A revised paper keeps its article number and gains a dated entry in its version history, with a separate file for each version. Earlier discussion continues to identify the version it addressed.

Article types

  • Articles — papers an author presents here as a finished version.
  • Discussion papers — working versions or preprints, hosted with permission so that readers can test them. The author may revise them or publish them elsewhere.
  • Commentaries — signed responses that develop an argument of their own about a published paper.
  • Author replies — an author’s answer to a commentary, linked to it.
  • Symposia — a paper published together with several commentaries and a reply.

Review status

The editor selects every contribution, and each one displays its status. The journal does not claim conventional human peer review. Any later human peer review will be identified separately, with its scope and process stated. Simulated AI review and published responses do not confer peer-reviewed status. See the editorial policy.

All contributions are free to read. Authors pay no submission or publication fees. Authors retain copyright unless an explicit agreement states otherwise; any reuse license appears on the relevant article.

Citation

Each article page gives a recommended citation with its volume, article number, version, and stable web address. Articles do not yet carry DOIs.

The journal and the book

The journal is hosted on the website of Mind, Matter, and Meaning, a book project by its editor, but it is not an extension of the book. Papers need not agree with it, and publication implies no editorial endorsement.
